Hourly to salary calculator

Enter an hourly rate to see the annual, monthly, biweekly and weekly equivalent, or switch to convert a salary back to an hourly rate. All figures are gross pay before tax and deductions.

Annual salary
$52,000
Monthly (annual ÷ 12)
$4,333
Semi-monthly (24 pay periods)
$2,167
Biweekly (26 pay periods)
$2,000
Weekly
$1,000
Daily
$200.00

Based on 2,080 paid hours a year (40 hrs x 52 weeks). Monthly and per-period figures divide the annual total evenly, as most payroll systems do for salaried staff.

How the math works
  • Annual salary = hourly rate x hours per week x paid weeks per year. At 40 hours and 52 weeks that is hourly x 2,080.
  • Quick estimate: double the hourly rate and add three zeros. $25/hr is roughly $50,000 (exact: $52,000).
  • Hourly from salary = salary ÷ (hours per week x paid weeks). $60,000 at 40 hrs x 52 weeks = $28.85/hr.
  • Overtime is added at 1.5x the hourly rate for the hours you enter. Bonuses and shift premiums raise the FLSA regular rate, which this quick calculator does not model.

Inputs

Hourly rate— Base rate before overtime, e.g. $24.50
Scheduled hours per week— e.g. 40, 37.5, 32 for a four-day week
Paid weeks per year— 52 if holidays and vacation are paid; subtract unpaid weeks
Regular overtime hours per week (non-exempt only)— Hours over 40, paid at 1.5x under the FLSA

Conversion formulas

Worked example: $25/hr, 40 hours a week, 52 paid weeks, no overtime.

OutputFormulaExample
Annual hoursHours per week x paid weeks40 x 52 = 2,080
Annual salaryHourly rate x annual hours$25 x 2,080 = $52,000
MonthlyAnnual / 12$52,000 / 12 = $4,333.33
Semi-monthlyAnnual / 24$52,000 / 24 = $2,166.67

Mental shortcut: at 40 hours a week, double the hourly rate and add three zeros for a rough annual salary ($25/hr is about $50,000). The exact multiplier is 2,080, so the shortcut understates pay by 4%.

How to use this template

  1. 1

Enter the hourly rate and weekly hours

Use scheduled hours, not a guess at average hours. A full-time US schedule is usually 40 hours; many UK and Indian contracts use 37.5 or 48.

  2. 2

    Set paid weeks per year

Leave it at 52 when holidays and vacation are paid. Subtract any unpaid weeks, for example 50 for a role with two weeks of unpaid shutdown.

  3. 3

Add regular overtime only if it is predictable

For a non-exempt employee who reliably works 5 extra hours a week, enter 5 to see the annual figure including time-and-a-half. Leave it at 0 when quoting a base salary.

  4. 4

Read the pay-period figure you need

Monthly divides by 12, semi-monthly by 24, biweekly by 26. Use the figure that matches your payroll calendar when comparing an hourly offer to a salaried one.

  5. 5

    Download the worksheet for records

Use the CSV to convert a whole team or a job-posting range at once, and keep the formula column with the offer file.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert an hourly wage to an annual salary?

Multiply the hourly rate by hours per week and then by paid weeks per year. At 40 hours and 52 weeks the multiplier is 2,080, so $25 an hour is $52,000 a year. Use fewer weeks if some time off is unpaid: 50 weeks at 40 hours gives 2,000 hours.

How much is $20 an hour per year?

$20 an hour is $41,600 a year at 40 hours a week and 52 paid weeks. That is $3,466.67 a month, $1,600 every two weeks and $800 a week, all before tax. At 37.5 hours a week it is $39,000 a year.

How do I convert a salary to an hourly rate?

Divide the annual salary by annual hours. For a 40-hour week that is salary / 2,080: $60,000 works out to $28.85 an hour and $80,000 to $38.46 an hour. For a 37.5-hour week divide by 1,950 instead.

Is 2,080 hours the right number for a year?

2,080 is 40 hours x 52 weeks and is the standard US payroll convention. A calendar year actually has 260 or 261 weekdays, which is 2,080 or 2,088 hours, so some payroll systems see an occasional 27th biweekly pay date. Most employers still use 2,080 to set hourly equivalents.

Does the calculator include overtime and taxes?

It includes overtime at 1.5x the hourly rate if you enter regular overtime hours. It does not deduct taxes: every figure is gross pay. Bonuses and shift differentials also change the FLSA regular rate used for overtime, which this quick conversion does not model.

Should I post the hourly rate or the salary in a job ad?

Post the basis on which the person will actually be paid. Pay transparency laws in states such as California, Colorado, Washington, New York and Illinois require a good-faith range, and quoting an hourly role as an annual figure can mislead candidates if hours vary.
