1. Welcome & about us
Welcome to [Company name]. This handbook introduces who we are, what we stand for, and the policies that shape how we work together. It is intended as a guide and does not create a contract of employment. [Company name] may update these policies from time to time, and the latest version always supersedes earlier ones.
2. Handbook contents
A complete handbook typically covers these sections.
- Company overview, mission, and values
- Employment basics: classifications, probation, at-will/notice status
- Code of conduct and anti-harassment
- Compensation, pay schedule, and timekeeping
3. Employment basics
This section defines employee classifications (full-time, part-time, temporary), any probationary period, and the nature of the employment relationship ([at-will / notice-based] as permitted by law). It also covers equal-opportunity commitments, background checks, and the conditions under which employment may begin and end.

Frequently asked questions
Is an employee handbook legally required?
A handbook itself is rarely mandated, but many of the policies inside it are required by law (for example anti-harassment, leave, or safety notices). A well-built handbook is also a strong defense in employment disputes.
Should the handbook be a contract?
Usually no. Most companies include a disclaimer stating the handbook is a guide, not a contract, so they retain flexibility to update policies. Check with counsel on the right wording for your jurisdiction.
How often should the handbook be updated?
Review it at least annually and whenever laws or company practices change. Version every release, communicate material changes, and re-collect acknowledgements to keep it enforceable.
