Is Trainual onboarding software?
It is a knowledge platform used for onboarding. Trainual assigns documented processes for new hires to read, but it does not run multi-step workflows or collect compliance paperwork such as I-9 forms.
Small companies whose people work from home need onboarding judged on published pricing, payroll links, documented know-how and setup effort for a team without a dedicated HR person.
A small remote company often onboards one hire at a time, with the founder or an office manager doing the work. The new person cannot absorb habits by sitting next to colleagues, so written processes matter more. Setup has to take days, not a project plan, and pricing needs to be visible before a sales call.
Gusto lists its prices openly (the Simple plan is $49 monthly with a $6 per-employee charge) and suits companies of 1 to 100 people who want payroll and onboarding together. Rippling adds account and device setup to the HR record, from an estimated $8 per employee plus a $35 to $40 base, but needs 4 to 10 weeks of configuration. Trainual helps remote staff learn how the company works through documented processes.
Trainual's Core plan, estimated at $249 a month for 10 seats, works out to about $25 per employee for a 10-person company, higher than several HR platforms that include onboarding. Eddy targets small teams without a people ops function, though buyers get a demo rather than a trial, and a quote rather than a price list. Remote-first companies hiring across borders can find employer of record providers such as Deel under Onboarding Software.
Published price means the vendor shows a figure; quote only means it does not. The best-fit and tradeoff lines are each tool's own.
Showing 10 of 10
| Tool | Published price | Best for | Main tradeoff |
|---|---|---|---|
| BambooHRSponsored | $10 per employee/mo ($250/mo minimum) | BambooHR is best for HR generalists and people operations managers at companies with 25 to 300 employees who need a single platform for employee records, onboarding, time tracking, and performance reviews. | BambooHR scalability ceiling hits hard around 300–500 employees |
| Gusto | $49/mo + $6 per person | Gusto is best for small business owners, startup founders, and office managers at companies with 1 to 100 employees who need reliable payroll with transparent pricing and do not want to negotiate custom quotes. It fits teams that handle HR part-time alongside other responsibilities and want a platform that works out of the box without dedicated HRIS staff. | Gusto base price increase from $40 to $49 signals rising costs for existing customers |
| RipplingSponsored | ~$8/employee/mo + $35-$40/mo (est.) | Rippling is best for technology-forward companies with 50 to 2,000 employees that want to manage HR, IT, and finance operations from a single platform. It fits teams with a technical operations mindset: the kind of company where the head of people operations thinks in systems and workflows rather than forms and approvals. | Rippling setup complexity requires significant implementation investment |
| Trainual | ~$249/mo for 10 seats (est.) | Owners, operations managers, and HR generalists at 10-to-200-person companies get the most from Trainual when they need to document how the company works and use that documentation as the foundation for onboarding new hires. | Trainual is a knowledge platform, not a workflow orchestration tool for complex onboarding processes |
| Process Street | $100/month (billed annually) | Process Street is best for operations-minded teams that need to standardize repeatable processes across multiple departments, with onboarding as one use case among many. | Process Street is not an HR tool and lacks onboarding-specific features like buddy programs and new hire portals |
| Sapling | From ~$4,800/yr (est.) | HR and people operations teams at companies with 100 to 2,000 employees get the most from Sapling when they need structured onboarding workflows, centralized people data and solid integrations with the ATS and payroll systems they already run. | Sapling's Kallidus acquisition introduces uncertainty about the product's independent roadmap |
| GoCo | Workforce Premium + QuickBooks Online Plus: $203/mo + $10 per employee (50% off for 3 months) | The GoCo-based tools now suit U.S. small businesses of roughly 5 to 100 employees that already use QuickBooks Online and want onboarding, hiring and offboarding inside the same account as payroll. | GoCo cannot be bought on its own anymore |
| Eddy | quote only | Eddy is best for small businesses that want to run onboarding, paperwork, and first-week workflows with less manual follow-up and without the overhead of an enterprise HR rollout. | Eddy pricing requires validation because there is no published rate |
| WorkBright | $25 per I-9 (WorkBright+) | Best for US employers with high-volume, seasonal or distributed hiring: staffing agencies, gig platforms, home care and healthcare staffing, restaurant and retail chains, and construction or logistics companies onboarding crews at job sites. | Narrow scope |
| Zoho People | $1.25 per user per month billed yearly, $1.50 monthly | Zoho People suits HR generalists at small and mid-sized companies who need leave, attendance and records in one place and whose finance team watches cost per head closely. | Zoho People key modules sit in upper tiers |
