Frequently asked questions

What's a healthy span of control?

Most managers handle 4-8 direct reports well. Fewer can signal an unnecessary layer; many more risks shallow management. The template flags spans outside this range so you can review them.

How do I keep the org chart up to date?

Tie updates to your joiner, mover, and leaver process — whenever someone changes role, update the reporting table. Many HRIS tools can generate the chart automatically from this same data.

Should I show vacant roles on the org chart?

Yes. Showing open and planned roles turns the chart into a planning tool, not just a directory. The vacant flag links your structure directly to your headcount plan.
